Floyd Mayweather Says He Could Jump to Middleweight to Fight Sergio Martinez

Justin TateJun 4, 2018

Floyd Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO) is now saying, according to ESPN UK, that he will consider moving up to middleweight (160 lbs) to face the division's champion, Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO).

Martinez is the pound-for-pound No. 3-rated fighter in the world behind only Mayweather and WBO welterweight (147 lbs) champ Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO) according to Ring Magazine.

Martinez, though two weight divisions above Mayweather and Pacquiao, has tried to lure either fighter into the ring by offering a catchweight of 150 lbs.

With Mayweather's recent ascent to junior middleweight (154 lbs) to face the WBA champ of the division, Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO), the possibility of a Mayweather-Martinez meeting became stronger.

Mayweather said the following:

"

"I can't rule out the future, you know down the line I may want to make that jump and fight at middleweight, you just never know. I just want to give the fans exciting fights and if Martinez is the guy at that time then we shall see, but right now my main focus is on Miguel Cotto."

"

Mayweather's fight against Cotto is scheduled for May 5. Should Mayweather win, fans could look for a more definitive answer in the post-fight press conference or the following days.
