Celtics Trade Rumors: Boston Shouldn't Deal Ray Allen or Rajon Rondo

Eric BowmanMar 8, 2012

The Boston Celtics are one of the many teams rumored to make a big move before the March 15 NBA trade deadline, but they'd be better off keeping their big stars and fighting hard for another championship.

Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen are the two players currently generating the most buzz in the rumor mill, but Boston should keep both.

Not only would it keep them as a strong team, but it would also give them the best shot at winning the title this year.

Yes, the Celtics are going to have to re-shape the team in the near future, as the original big three continue to get older.

However, the Celtics are still in contention right now, and making a blockbuster deal would not bring a championship to Boston at the moment.

Currently in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics are going to make the playoffs, and once there, all it takes is for the team to get hot and on a magical run to win it all.

They're fully capable of doing this, but if they were to trade Rondo or Allen away it wouldn't end well this season.

Boston would only move Rondo for the "right deal," according to NBA.com.

That most likely means bringing in Pau Gasol and either another player or draft picks from the Lakers. However, that wouldn't make the Celtics better, as Rondo is very crucial to the success of the team.

As for Allen,  Sam Amick of SI.com reports that he's the most likely Celtic player to be moved.

While I agree that if you're going to move one of the two, Allen is the guy, Boston would still be just fine by keeping him.

Sure, he has an expiring contract, but there's no denying his ability to come through in the clutch, and come playoff time, he'll do exactly that, which is why the Celtics should keep him.

Boston can definitely hang with Chicago and Miami, but they'd have to stay in tact to do so.

Dealing the star players away will all but guarantee the Celtics are toast.

If there's a way to bring in solid talent to add better depth then that is what needs to be done.

By trading Rondo or Allen, the Celtics would no longer be contenders this year.

That is why they shouldn't pull the trigger on any of these rumored deals.
