Peyton Manning to Redskins: Why Eli Manning Will Keep Peyton out of Washington

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Let the Peyton Manning sweepstakes begin!

Not surprisingly, one of the teams rumored to have serious interest in Manning is the Washington Redskins, who have lacked an elite quarterback for years.

While Mike Jones of The Washington Post is reporting they will make an "aggressive effort" to land the Colts great, two factors may make that very difficult.

The Redskins don’t appear immediately equipped to satisfy Manning’s apparent desire to play for a team that gives him a good chance to make a successful return to the sport and chase a second career Super Bowl triumph. They went 5-11 last season and lacked a 1,000-yard receiver. Their offensive line remains a work in progress. And if Manning played for the Redskins, he would have to face his brother in two NFC East games per season.

One person familiar with the situation said Wednesday he wasn’t certain if Manning would consider an offer by the Redskins seriously because of those factors. But Manning and agent Tom Condon almost certainly would encourage the Redskins’ pursuit, that person said, in an attempt to intensify the bidding and raise the price tag for other teams.

Mike Tirico on SportsCenter today noted (and I'm paraphrasing here) that the Manning brothers found it an awkward experience having to play against one another in the past and didn't enjoy those games. He felt that fact made the possibility of Manning landing with Washington unlikely.

I have to be honest—I think that is an odd reason to not play for a team. It's not like he's a defensive end trying to sack Eli or something like that.

It seems like the least likely factor among the many that make Manning going to the Redskins unlikely. The fact that the Redskins don't have a great roster—especially on offense—and the fact that the team should focus on rebuilding with young players and not veterans makes this union most unlikely to me.

Nonetheless, the fact that Eli Manning is in New York continues to rumored as a factor working against the Redskins. If the two truly don't want to play against each other twice a year, don't expect Peyton to end up a Redskin this offseason.
