Chris Jericho vs. CM Punk Beginning to Pick Up Steam Towards WrestleMania 28

Nathan GieseMar 6, 2012

While taking the day after RAW aired to think about what was going on, something occurred to me that may not go with the normal Internet Wrestling Community train of thought.

For weeks, I've read articles and comments on here stating CM Punk and Chris Jericho's match for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 28 has become sort of an afterthought, forgotten about and losing steam as we head ever closer to the show of shows.

There has been a general thought (mostly within the inner circles of the Internet Wrestling Community) that Jericho vs. Punk will be a complete dud in terms of match build-up.  Thoughts of "we won't get to see what these two are capable of because it will be overshadowed by The Rock vs. John Cena," and "WWE has completely ruined this rivalry by having Jericho not speak for the first month he was back.  Now things just seem rushed."

For the most part, those fans may be right.  Jericho not speaking may have been a different approach to his much anticipated return, but it served it's own purpose.  It was used in a way to get fans to hate him, just like any good heel does.

By not saying anything for upwards to one full month, Jericho brought even more anticipation as to when he finally would address why he came back.  When he did finally speak, we were treated to the reason why he is own as one of the best mic men in the history of the WWE.

Now, consider the fact that fans were furious in the fact that Jericho had been rumored for months to be the winner of the Royal Rumble match.  Except, WWE decided to throw us a curveball by having Sheamus walk away the victor of the match, much to the displeasure of wrestling fans all over the Internet.

Of course, these are all just shortsighted complaints of fans that don't like something different, but constantly complain about things always being the same.  It's the curse of the Internet Wrestling Community: As hard as you try, you will never make them happy.

With that being said, the Jericho vs. Punk rivalry is being performed to perfection, and it's time for the fans on the Internet to realize that, rather than trying to perfect something they have no control of.

Considering that fact that Rock and Cena will be, and has been highlighted as such, the main point of 'Mania this year, Jericho and Punk are putting in quality work en route to what will be an epic confrontation on April Fool's Day.

Not only will we be treated to some great promos in the coming weeks from two brilliant speakers, but these are two of the most highly respected professional wrestlers in the world.  Together, they can make magic happen with their words then back it up with their physical abilities.

Right now, one week removed from having Jericho blindside him on top of the ramp and apply the Walls of Jericho while pressuring the back, Punk has been selling his back injury to perfection.  Whether or not the injury is legitimate or a work is irrelevant at this point.  Punk selling the back injury means that the script is falling into place.

Also, there is this little fact that Jericho and Punk, while having only a few matches in which they were both participants, neither has a clean win over the other. At Elimination Chamber, Punk knocked Jericho out of the match, causing him to be removed from the match for medical reasons.

On last night's RAW, Jericho and Punk were pitted in a tag-team match against each other.  At the end of that match, Jericho and Punk were both rolled up into a ball with both men's shoulders on the mat.  While Jericho may have been awarded the victory of this night, Punk has a reason to feel that Jericho has never defeated him cleanly either.

Overall, this feud is shaping out to be one of the major selling points for WrestleMania, whether fans want to realize it or not.  We could sit here and nitpick every little detail and give reasons and examples for ways we feel the feud could be better.

In the end, the feud is perfect the way it is, it's just up to the rest of us to realize what is right in front of us and except it for what it is before we miss out on something amazing.
