Why GSP Must Destroy BJ Penn
I'd normally write an argument about why GSP will win this match, citing his abilities over various facets of MMA and his advantages in each of those categories. I'd normally also be more then willing to defend any and all opinions, even willing to change my mind if an argument is good enough. But B.J. Penn has officially irritated me beyond the normal point of argument.
B.J. Penn is, without a doubt, the cockiest, most over-rated fighter around right now. And please, don't confuse the phrases "over-rated" and "untalented." I will NEVER say that B.J. isn't talented. In fact, I'm willing to say that B.J. is VERY talented, maybe one of the most talented LWs ever.
BUT HE ISN'T INVINCIBLE!
B.J. doesn't seem to believe that, since he's spent the last few years peppering Dana White with constant text messages, requesting/demanding matches with HWs, Anderson Silva, Quinton Jackson, Chuck Liddell. Men who, on a regular basis, weigh an average of 50 pounds more then he does.
There are even rumors that he requested a match with Brock Lesnar after his match with Heath Herring.
Not only that, but he has the audacity to say that his previous three-round war with GSP was a fluke. Between accusations of referee bias and improper scoring, and excuses of "not taking him seriously" and being partially injured, B.J. has basically asked that we believe a lesser clone of himself had fought GSP previously. Sorry B.J., you're not Dr. Doom.
B.J. and GSP did have a very competitive first match, where people could make the argument that maybe B.J. did win. Sure, he had done some real damage to George's face and opened up a good cut. He was even able to stifle a few takedown attempts by GSP.
But he still lost the match to the better fighter. Not only that, but B.J. (as we seem to forget) is only 1-2 at 170 lbs in MMA.
So it comes down to GSP, who emerged as what can only be described as 'ridiculously good' after his Serra loss, to shut up the man who has claimed to be "God" compared to Jon Fitch. GSP not only has to win this match, but he has to win by KO or submission to restore order in the UFC WW and LW ranks.
A decision will only bring out more conspiracy theories. A split decision will bring out nothing short of a witch hunt. A knockout or submission will squash any questions and bring stability to the divisions.
LWs won't have to wonder how long it will take them to get a title shot, spending their time either getting rusty or fighting meaningless matches. (My guess is Kenflo is gonna have six months from right now, minimum)
No longer will the (edit)WWs have to guess whether they will wait nearly a YEAR for their title shot. (Thiago Alves now has to worry about a possible eight-12 month wait before his rightfully earned WW title shot)
B.J. will still be a good champion and a great LW. GSP will still be king of the WW mountain, and life will be good.
Should B.J. (god forbid) win, you're going to see a WHOLE LOT of angry WWs and LWs in the UFC.
And at least one angry fan, turning off the TV immediately so he doesn't have to listen to him tout just how great he really is.
