Texas Football Recruiting: The Longhorns' Top Commits and Targets for 2013

Edwin WeathersbyJun 4, 2018

If you follow Texas football recruiting, then you should know the Longhorns don't care about the national recruiting scene. They truly and firmly believe that locking down their state is all they need, and they only go after national prospects who have Texas ties.

Well, this year is no different.

Texas has gotten off to its usual fast start, and their 2013 class is full of Texans. For this read, I'm going to give you a couple top commitments and top targets the Longhorns are after.

2013 Texas Recruiting Class Capsule

1 of 7

Texas has 12 commitments, and per Scout.com, five of those 12 are 4-stars, and two are 5-star elite prospects. This class is likely to be a bit on the small side, and I think 18 total signed LOIs is the over/under for Texas in 2013 recruiting.

Led by QB Tyrone Swoopes and WR Ricky Seals-Jones, the class also features several talented OLs, and of course, all 12 pledges are from Texas.

This is going to be an interesting cycle for Mack Brown. He must weigh the limited availability of scholarships versus supplementing his roster with as much talent as possible.

Top Commitment: Tyrone Swoopes, QB

2 of 7

Swoopes is a 5-star prospect and the No. 11 overall player in the country, per Rivals. He's a 6'5", 220-pound QB prospect with excellent athleticism, a strong arm and a good feel for the game.

He's going to hear a ton of Vince Young comparisons attached to his name due to his size, athletic ability and dual-threat skill set. Nonetheless, Swoopes is one of the top players in the country and the headliner for the 2013 Texas class.

Target: Texas Losing Manning to Oklahoma?

3 of 7

Justin Manning is a 6'3", 275-pound DT from Texas who could have his eyes on the rival school of the Longhorns.

According to Rivals, Oklahoma could be the leader for Manning.  It remains to be seen if he commits to OU, but Texas is behind in this race and will have some work to do to make up ground.

If they don't, then Manning could indeed head to Norman and wreak havoc on UT passers at the State Fair for the next four years.

Target: Harris Has Taken Two Visits to Texas

4 of 7

Marcell Harris is a 6'2", 205-pound DB from Orlando.

Yes, that's not Texas, so we know what that means: Texas must really, really like Harris since they rarely leave the state for a player.

Harris has great athleticism and range, he plays physically and will attack downhill. Harris has good hips to turn and run, and is ranked No.39 in the Rivals100.

Prime Commitment: Ricky Seals-Jones, WR

5 of 7

At 6'5" and 220 pounds, Seals-Jones is a huge get for Texas. The Longhorns need a physically imposing pass-catcher soon, and RSJ is the man for the job.

He's a 5-star prospect via Scout.com and could actually grow into a TE. Seals-Jones plays QB right now, but his size, length, solid play speed, large catch radius and skill set scream, "Put 'em at WR!"

I think Texas will oblige, and Seals-Jones will be an All-Big 12 selection in a few seasons.

Recruiting Spotlight: Offensive Line Class

6 of 7

Last year, UT signed three very good OLs in Curtis Riser, Kennedy Estelle and Camrhon Hughes.

Well, this year, they have three more coming to Austin: Kent Perkins, Darius James and Jake Raulerson.

Raulerson could play DE or even TE, but he could be a great OT. Perkins is a 6'5", 300-pounder with size, length and strength to factor up and down the trenches, and James is a 6'5", 315-pound mammoth with great movement skills for a big man.

Target: Texas Likes 5-Star DB Prospect—on Offense?

7 of 7

Su'a Cravens is ranked No. 5 in the Rivals100 and has offers from all over the country. He's a 6'1", 205-pounder from Los Angeles who has been in touch with Texas.

He notched 100 tackles and 11 sacks on defense to go along with three INTs.
