Chael Sonnen Calls Thiago Alves a "Boob" for Getting Submitted

Jordy McElroyJun 7, 2018

Thiago Alves' third-round submission loss to Martin Kampmann has drawn interest from UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen, who had some interesting words for the Brazilian striker on the post-fight show on Fuel TV for UFC on FX 2: Alves vs. Kampmann.

"

There is nobody else more surprised that [Alves] tapped out, more than Martin Kampmann. I think Martin will tell you himself. He didn't have that choke. You have to be a real boob to get caught at the end of the fight like that.

"

Alves, who had been sluggish and out of shape in recent bouts, appeared to have returned to form against Kampmann.

After out-pointing the Dane on the feet throughout the entire bout, Alves dove in for a late takedown in the final minute, which Kampmann quickly countered with a guillotine choke that forced the tap with only 53 seconds left in the third round.

It was definitely a tough loss for Alves, who was looking to bounce back from a string of inconsistent performances and reinsert himself into the title picture.

As for Sonnen, it's interesting that he of all people would go after another fighter for getting caught in a submission. In 11 total losses, Sonnen was submitted in eight of those bouts. Half of those submission losses came by triangle choke.

In comparison to Alves' situation, Sonnen was also a victim of last-minute drama in his August 2010 championship bout against Anderson Silva. After dominating every round, Sonnen was submitted with a triangle choke with less than two minutes left in the fifth round.
