Maria Sharapova Rory McIlroy Video: Watch Golf Star Beat Sharapova at Own Game
It turns out Rory McIlroy may have another career to turn to in case this whole golf thing doesn't work out.
A day after becoming the No. 1 golfer in the world with his win at the Honda Classic, McIlroy took some time out of his busy schedule to attend Caroline Wozniacki's exhibition match against Maria Sharapova at Madison Square Garden on Monday night. He and Wozniacki are dating, after all, so showing up to support her was a good way to score points.
Moving right along, McIlroy soon found himself out on the court with a racket in his hand, a relatively rare occurrence for garden-variety tennis spectators. Much to the crowd's amusement, Wozniacki had invited him to play a point against Sharapova, just for funsies.
The weird part? McIlroy won the point.
Yup.
It's not like he and Sharapova engaged in a vicious, hard-fought rally or anything. McIlroy played it safe with an underhand serve, and Sharapova did him the favor of not sending a screaming forehand return directly at his face. Like a good sport, she played along.
She clearly underestimated McIlroy's lob shot, though. Sharapova made him approach the net with what I'm sure she thought was a clever shot, but McIlroy was not fooled. He returned it over Sharapova's head and her return landed well out of bounds.
Point for McIlroy. And for all intents and purposes, game, set and match.
For the record, Wozniacki lost the exhibition itself in straight sets. I'm assuming the point McIlroy won for his beloved didn't actually count, though it would have helped.
Wozniacki would be better off calling on McIlroy at a Grand Slam tournament. Goodness knows that's when she actually needs help.
I know, I know. Too easy. But seriously, she really should consider it.
