Lakers Rumors: Kirk Hinrich a Wildly Better Option Than Ramon Sessions for L.A.

With diminished expectations for adding a point guard to the Lakers, GM Mitch Kupchack should forget about Ramon Sessions and focus on landing the Hawks Kirk Hinrich. 

Hinrich is not a perfect fit for the Lakers' needs, but he is a far better fit than Sessions. And the Lakers are are rumored to be pursuing both. 

Alex Kennedy of Hoopsworld sheds some light on the rumors.

The Lakers have expressed significant interest in Ramon Sessions, who will likely be traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers. After this season, Sessions has a $4,551,626 player option that he likely won’t exercise, which is why Cleveland wants to deal him now before losing him for nothing. 

Los Angeles has also been pursuing Kirk Hinrich in recent weeks. The Lakers have been linked to Hinrich in the past and the Atlanta Hawks would move the veteran point guard if the right deal came along. The two teams have had conversations in recent weeks.

The Lakers' connection to these players is not new. But the intensity of which they are pursuing them has likely increased. Let's take a look at why Hinrich is the better option. 

Why Hinrich is a Better Fit

Sessions is having a solid season. He is averaging 10.5 points and 5.3 assists per game in 24.9 minutes per game. 

However, we can't judge him by his numbers alone; it's also important to look at what he brings to the table. He would be a nice fit for the Lakers in the pick-and-roll game. Sessions excels in this aspect. 

The Lakers need much more than that, though. They also need a guard that can penetrate, hit from distance and play defense. 

Sessions has decent penetration skills, but he is a bad outside shooter and a terrible defender. 

Meanwhile, Hinrich's numbers do not compare to Sessions'. He is averaging 5.2 points and 2.5 assists per game, but his game is a better fit for the Lakers. 

Hinrich is solid in the pick and roll. He is an excellent mid-range shooter and decent from distance. 

He is barely average when it comes to penetrating, but he is a solid defender. Hinrich will struggle with quick point guards, but he is solid against others. And that is way better than Sessions, who can't guard anyone.
