Frank Leboeuf: “David Beckham Is Overrated Because of His Nice Face”

Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf, who today acts as sometimes talking-head for ESPN, has downplayed the talents of David Beckham—labeling the midfielder as “overrated” and crediting his “nice face” for his recent footballing career.

As is often the case on the ESPN Soccernet Press Pass Show, it was left to Janusz Michallik to reach the more level-headed, pragmatic conclusion that David Beckham, while obviously a money-making magnet, also offers AC Milan options in midfield at a time when the Rossoneri are looking for new ways to cultivate their play.

Pointing to Rene Gattuso’s long-term absence, and wondering why Andrea Pirlo is an automatic choice for Ancelotti, Michallik contested that Beckham will play an important role at Milan outside of selling replica shirts.

Returning the spotlight to Leboeuf, the Frenchman responded by arguing that Beckham will add nothing to Milan’s tactical options on the pitch, claiming “at the end of the day, they did not need David Beckham.”
