WWE News: Reported Future Plans for Drew McIntyre on SmackDown

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

After weeks upon weeks of Teddy Long teasing that he would fire Drew McIntyre, the SmackDown general manager finally gave McIntyre the boot last Friday.

But as we all know, “firings” in professional wrestling generally mean little to nothing in real life and are used primarily for storyline purposes.

No surprise here: McIntyre’s firing on last Friday’s SmackDown is expected to be worked into a major storyline on this week’s show.

Sources have confirmed that the current plan is for Drew McIntyre to make his return to SmackDown this week after being fired last week. RAW GM John Lauranaitis is set to be in charge of SmackDown as part of this week’s GM switch, and he is expected to rehire McIntyre.

There has been talk that McIntyre will be getting a new “playboy” gimmick soon.

"

Most of us assumed that McIntyre would make his way back onto SmackDown some way, but I originally thought that a sympathetic Long would rehire him, leading a very thankful McIntyre to turn baby face.

The last major losing streak that was turned into a storyline happened a few years back with MVP, and that led to a face turn for him, so I kind of assumed that’s where the WWE was headed with McIntyre as well.

But now that I’ve thought about it some more, I like idea of John Laurinaitis rehiring McIntyre and then having McIntyre use his new gimmick to become one of the heels on Team Laurinaitis for the likely GM vs. GM match at WrestleMania 28.

It’s no secret that I’ve always been a big fan of McIntyre, and though I think the WWE completely dropped the ball with his “Chosen One” gimmick, Laurinaitis has been a very vocal supporter of McIntyre on Twitter, so it could benefit both men to pair them together.

McIntyre badly needs some sort of storyline (that isn’t a losing streak) in order to rebound from a really bad 2011 and start making some noise in the WWE.

It looks like he will be getting the chance to do that soon. Let’s hope he makes the most of it.
