Picking a Top-40 Hit Song to Describe Each MLB Team Heading into 2012
In case anyone out there didn't already know, we're less than 30 days away from opening day, and baseball fans across the country couldn't be happier.
Teams everywhere are hunkered down in the Cactus and Grapefruit leagues, prepping themselves for what they hope can be storybook seasons.
They may not all end like a fairytale, but with the help of America's Top-40 Countdown, let's take a look at how every major league teams' 2012 campaigns stack up to the country's biggest hit songs.
Arizona Diamondbacks
1 of 30Song: Crawling Back to You
Artist: Daughtry
The Arizona Diamondbacks' 2011 season was good enough for a division title, and though they did come up short in the NLDS, there's plenty of hope that they'll be crawling back to the playoffs despite rejuvenated opposition in the NL West.
Atlanta Braves
2 of 30Song: Don't Stop
Artist: Foster the People
The Atlanta Braves spent much of the 2011 season primed for a postseason appearance, but things quickly fell apart towards the end of the season and their collapse ultimately sent them into the offseason without October baseball.
In 2012, the Braves faithful are certainly hoping their team doesn't stop winning early like they did last year.
Baltimore Orioles
3 of 30Song: International Love
Artist: Pitbull ft. Chris Brown
The Baltimore Orioles have had their share of struggles in recent seasons, finding it increasingly difficult to work their way towards the top of the tough AL East.
This offseason, they showed some international love in bringing in players they hope can push them back towards the top.
Boston Red Sox
4 of 30Song: Sorry For Party Rocking
Artist: LMFAO
Last season, the Boston Red Sox party rocked their way to a near-record collapse, falling out of the playoff race.
With a new sheriff in town, Bobby Valentine has cracked down on alcohol in the clubhouse and will hopefully right the ship for the Sox.
Chicago Cubs
5 of 30Song: Mr. Know it All
Artist: Kelly Clarkson
He hasn't made a whole lot of moves just yet, but the Chicago Cubs brought Theo Epstein into the organization in the hopes that he will be their Mr. Know it All, and hopefully push their team in the right direction.
Chicago White Sox
6 of 30Song: Shake it Out
Artist: Florence & the Machine
Adam Dunn came into the 2011 season looking to team up with Paul Konerko and slug their way through the AL Central.
Konerko held up his end of the bargain, but Dunn certainly did not. This year he looks to shake off any ill-effects from last year and get back to form.
Cincinnati Reds
7 of 30Song: You Da One
Artist: Rihanna
The Cincinnati Reds turned a lot of heads this offseason with their acquisition of Mat Latos from San Diego in exchange for a number of players.
With the team giving up that much for Latos, it's clear that he was "da one" they wanted.
Cleveland Indians
8 of 30Song: Brighter Than the Sun
Artist: Colbie Caillat
Getting off to a very hot start in 2011, the Cleveland Indians revitalized their fanbase, and though their acquisition of Ubaldo Jimenez failed to equate to a postseason berth, the team's future is looking brighter already.
Colorado Rockies
9 of 30Song: Love You Like a Love Song
Artist: Selena Gomez
It seems like Michael Cuddyer was on the Colorado Rockies' radar as soon as the season ended last fall, and though he got plenty of interest from suitors like the Red Sox and Phillies, the Rockies were the ones that showed him the most love, giving him a three-year, $31.5 million deal.
Detroit Tigers
10 of 30Song: Good Feeling
Artist: Flo Rida
Detroit Tigers fans were no doubt disappointed last fall when they fell just short of a World Series berth.
But with Cy Young/MVP winner Justin Verlander and newly signed Prince Fielder in tow, they've got to have a good feeling about their chances this time around.
Houston Astros
11 of 30Song: Disaster
Artist: JoJo
Losing more than 100 games in 2011, it's safe to say last season was a disaster for the Houston Astros.
With the possibility of players like Wandy Rodriguez and Carlos Lee heading out the door towards the trade deadline, it might be more of the same in 2012.
Kansas City Royals
12 of 30Song: We Are Young
Artist: Fun. & Janelle Monae
There's plenty of excitement in Kansas City this season as the Royals prepare to play host to the mid-summer classic in July.
They've also got a group of young and talented players who look ready to put it all together any time now.
Los Angeles Angels
13 of 30Song: Glad You Came
Artist: The Wanted
The Los Angeles Angels have plenty of talented players as it is, but you can bet that fans of the Halos are glad that Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson came to town.
Los Angeles Dodgers
14 of 30Song: Forget You
Artist: Cee-Lo Green
In the aftermath of the Frank McCourt era, the Los Angeles Dodgers current ownership situation continues to be a cloud over the future of the organization.
Even though they've been able to make moves for the better, like locking Matt Kemp in long-term, there certainly aren't any warm feelings left for McCourt.
Miami Marlins
15 of 30Song: Sexy and I know It
Artist: LMFAO
With a new manager, shortstop, starting pitcher, and closer heading into spring training, the newly relocated Miami Marlins are emerging as a "sexy" team to watch for in 2012 in the eyes of a casual baseball fan—much like the Miami Heat were after Chris Bosh and LeBron James invaded South Beach.
Milwaukee Brewers
16 of 30Song: Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)
Artist: Kelly Clarkson
Ryan Braun's successful appeal of his positive PED test came just weeks after Prince Fielder's signing just across Lake Michigan with the Detroit Tigers.
With the distractions put aside, the Brewers can finally set their sights on another NL Central crown.
Minnesota Twins
17 of 30Song: Give Me Everything
Artist: Pitbull ft. Ne-Yo
It's no secret that the Minnesota Twins massively underperformed in 2011, with both poor play and injuries accounting for a 99-loss campaign.
With Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Denard Span missing a combined 265 games last year, Twins fans are hoping they can give everything this time around.
New York Mets
18 of 30Song: Without You
Artist: David Guetta ft. Usher
The New York Mets were surrounded by the question of whether or not Jose Reyes would be signed, dealt, or ignored for much of the 2011 season.
As he's found a home in a Marlins uniform, the Mets head into spring training and prepare to play the 2012 season without him.
New York Yankees
19 of 30Song: Good Life
Artist: One Republic
The New York Yankees' 2011 season certainly ended in disappointment, but when you have the pedigree for success that the Bronx Bombers do, anything less than a championship is a disappointment.
With the most inconsistent member of their rotation now in the National League and one of the league's best young starters taking his place, they should be living the good life once again in 2012.
Oakland Athletics
20 of 30Song: Moves Like Jagger
Artist: Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera
Gio Gonzalez, Trevor Cahill, Josh Willingham and Andrew Bailey are all gone. Yoenis Cespedes and Manny Ramirez are now here.
I guess you could say Billy Beane is making moves like Jagger.
Philadelphia Phillies
21 of 30Song: I won't Give Up
Artist: Jason Mraz
After a disappointing division series loss to the St. Louis Cardinals last October, Phillies fans were taken aback by the loss of a team primed for a World Series championship.
They're putting another great product onto the field again this year, and you'd better believe they won't be giving up until they're hoisting the hardware this fall.
Pittsburgh Pirates
22 of 30Song: Domino
Artist: Jessie J
The Pittsburgh Pirates were dealt an early blow this spring, when newly acquired starter A.J. Burnett bunted a ball off of his face, fracturing his orbital bone and setting him aside for what could be 10 weeks.
Let's hope this isn't just the first unfortunate domino to fall for the Pirates.
San Diego Padres
23 of 30Song: Young, Wild and Free
Artist: Wiz Khalifa & Snoop Dogg
With one of the youngest rosters in baseball, the San Diego Padres have gone through a number of changes, with highly touted prospect Anthony Rizzo and closer Heath Bell both out of the picture.
Carlos Quentin will be key to any success that the team has heading into the 2012 season.
San Francisco Giants
24 of 30Song: Back Home
Artist: Gym Class Heroes
Playing in only 45 games this past season, the San Francisco Giants definitely missed the contributions Buster Posey makes on the field. There's no doubt they're happy to have him back this time around this season as they look to get back to the postseason.
Seattle Mariners
25 of 30Song: Set Fire to the Rain
Artist: Adele
The Seattle Mariners made a bold move this offseason in unloading Michael Pineda to the New York Yankees in exchange for Jesus Montero.
If all pans out as planned, Montero will light a fire under an offense that has ranked near the bottom of the league in recent years.
St. Louis Cardinals
26 of 30Song: The One That Got Away
Artist: Katy Perry
The St. Louis Cardinals are no doubt riding high after their improbable World Series championship, but with Albert Pujols absent from spring training, things are no doubt different as Cards fans ponder life without Pujols.
Tampa Bay Rays
27 of 30Song: Heartbeat
Artist: The Fray
The Tampa Bay Rays improbable run towards a postseason berth last fall was one of the great stories in baseball from all of 2011.
With the expanded playoffs coming to the league, teams like the Rays will have that much more of a heartbeat when September rolls around.
Texas Rangers
28 of 30Song: Work Out
Artist: J. Cole
The Texas Rangers made a huge investment in Yu Darvish this offseason, beating out large posting bids from other teams, ultimately getting rights to negotiate with a fee of over $50 million.
Here's to hoping it works out for the Rangers as they look to replace the innings C.J. Wilson had been eating up.
Toronto Blue Jays
29 of 30Song: Someone Like You
Artist: Adele
As mentioned, the Texas Rangers' biggest competition for the posting of Yu Darvish was none other than the Toronto Blue Jays, who hoped adding the ace would get them over the hump in the tough AL East.
With Darvish now in a Rangers uniform, the Blue Jays are left hoping they can find someone like him as they continue to ponder their options.
Washington Nationals
30 of 30Song: A Thousand Years
Artist: Christina Perri
It may not actually be a thousand years since their last postseason appearance, but with the Washington Nationals/Montreal Expos franchise absent from the playoffs since 1981, it has to feel like it.
