Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo Lead Celtics to Overtime Win over Knicks

Patrick BusconeJun 3, 2018

This was, without question, the best game for the Celtics and more specifically, Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce. Although the Knicks aren't the best team in the NBA, and the Celtics needed overtime to handle them, the win was still quite impressive because it showed the great strengths that this Celtics team possesses.

The first and most obvious strength that the Celtics have is Rajon Rondo, and this game likely solidified Rondo's spot in Boston. Rondo had probably his best game of the year in the form of his league-high fourth triple-double that included 18 points, 20 assists and 17 rebounds.

What is unbelievable about Rondo's performance is that, at least shooting-wise, he wasn't dominant, yet he still found a way to dominate in every aspect of the game and account for over half of the team's points. Why the Celtics would want to trade Rondo seems like a mystery at this point.

Not only did Rondo have his best game of the season, but Pierce also had by far his best game of the season with 34 points, seven rebounds and three assists, including some huge shots down the stretch and the improbable game-tying three that sent the game into overtime.

This is the first game that Rondo and Pierce have both been able to play at their peaks, and we just saw how good the Celtics can be when both of their best players play at their best.

On top of that, the Celtics also got solid performances from Kevin Garnett (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Brandon Bass (18 points, four blocks).

This win is a great sign for the Celtics, who have struggled so far this season, and if they can play like this on a consistent basis then there is no reason they can't contend for a championship.
