World Football's Top 10 Tweets of the Weekend

Peter WebsterJun 3, 2018

Social media plays a huge part in our lives these days.

Trends and news feeds mean we receive information quicker than ever before, and it also means that the little person has a voice on whatever subject they choose.

Football is the biggest sport in the world, so it's no surprise to find Twitter feeds buzzing with comments on the weekend's most talked-about points.

Here are a few of the more interesting ones.

Harry Redknapp Brings out the Best in England Players

1 of 11

This amusing tweet by @AdrianHealey caught the eye as it was steeped in sarcasm

Healey is making the point that Harry Redknapp should possibly take the available England manager's job due to Fabio Capello handing in his resignation.

@AdrianHealey makes a good point.

Pogrebnyak Outscores Torres and Carroll

2 of 11

Goals and goal scoring records are the subjects that always seem to follow any mention of Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres.

This tweet by @dalejohnsonESPN shows that new Fulham striker Pavel Pogrebnyak is making them look even worse.

Pogrebnyak has played three games and scored five goals for Fulham since his move.

Zlatan Rates Zlatan

3 of 11

How dare you suggest a footballer needs to prove that he is a good player before a manager will sign him?

That's the impression Zlatan Ibrahimovic gives at least.

Zlatan loves to talk about Zlatan in the third person and rates himself rather highly, as indicated by @TouchlineDrama

Mourinho Not Benitez

4 of 11

Andre Villas-Boas' sacking doesn't seem to have disheartened Chelsea fans too much.

This tweet from @karolyn33 shows that the greater concern was the arrival of Rafael Benitez.

To Be Frank

5 of 11

This tweet from @petercwebster is clearly comical genius and it didn't receive the praise it deserved.

Am I beginning to sound as self triumphant as @piersmorgan yet?

Hopefully, you can figure out its hidden meaning without the requirement for explanation.

Maradona on Aguero

6 of 11

Real Madrid will be happy to know that Argentinian legend Diego Maradona wants his son-in-law, Sergio Aguero, to sign for the Bernabeu giants.

I'm sure Manchester City's Roberto Mancini won't appreciate Maradona's ringing endorsement.

Goal Conversion Affects Your League Position

7 of 11

@WhoScored posted this interesting statistic which shows how different the Premier League may look if Liverpool had managed to finish their chances a little better this season.

It's been no secret that the Merseyside reds are lacking a goal scorer and this proves it.

Cattermole in Films

8 of 11

Sunday saw the Tyne-Wear Derby in England between Newcastle and Sunderland.

Yellow-card magnet Lee Cattermole was up to his usual tricks and was booked after 40 seconds before being sent off a minute after full time...go figure.

@MirrorFootball started this amusing trend regarding movie titles called #cattermoleinfilms.

Euro Safety

9 of 11

@thesoccermaster highlights rail safety in Poland before the European Championships following a train collision—a serious issue.

With the amount of visitors that Poland and Ukraine are likely to receive during Euro 2004, let's hope they solve whatever issues they have quickly.

Breakdown in Communication

BABY BABY PIZZA BABY!!!

That's the dictionary translation of this tweet from @Erinnnna this weekend.

My Italian isn't great, but something tells me that Erin may have misheard slightly.

Afterthoughts

11 of 11

Twitter can be hilarious at times, but also extremely cruel.

There's no hiding for sports stars once a story is released, and often Twitter provides information—not always accurately—about an event before the news stations do.

If you're not on Twitter, I'd highly recommend getting an account which will allow you to read all of my B/R articles on the move through @petercwebster and also your favourite team stream through @BleacherReport.

As always, thanks for reading.
