Klitschko vs. Mormeck: Disgustingly Lopsided Fight Was Horrible for Boxing
The ills of boxing were on full display as the feeble excuse for a title fight Wladimir Klitschko vs. Marc Mormeck turned out to be the complete waste of time many assumed it would be.
Actually, I have to correct that. Many thought this was going to be a lopsided bout, but I don't think anyone expected it to be this lopsided.
Mormeck made it all the way to the second round before being sent to the canvas. He had the intestinal fortitude to get up from that knock down, but not the one that happened in the fourth.
That is certainly understanding. He was probably exhausted. He had thrown 19 punches already. Three of those even connected.
Yes, that's right. That is the entirety of his punching stats for the entire fight.
In that same time, Klitschko threw 135 punches and landed 39. And in 39 punches, he carded a knockout victory.
Boxing has certainly seen worse fights and uglier scenes, but this is one that should have been avoided. There was absolutely nothing compelling about this bout.
Klitschko towers over Mormeck by almost eight inches. Mormeck is barely big enough to be a heavyweight, and he saw his glory days as a cruiserweight. And those glory days are long gone. He is 39, and had not fought in well over a year.
This fight was a joke when it was announced, and it was an even bigger joke when it happened.
The sport would have been better off not delivering this lame duck of a fight. It is only going to turn fans off.
