Klitschko vs. Mormeck: The Marksman Will Be Another Link in Steelhammer's Chain

Brian MaziqueJun 1, 2018

Wladimir Klitschko will make short work of Jean-Marc Mormeck, and no that isn't a height joke, though that is one of the deciding factors. At 5'11", Mormeck will be hard pressed to navigate the jabs and outside power shots to gain the range to score on Wladimir.

Klitschko is 6'6" with a 81" reach. Compare that to Mormeck's 74" reach, and this will be a long night for The Marksman.

Take a look at this clip of Mormeck vs. David Haye. This fight was close up until this point:

Mormeck was dropped, from a hard right hand, but he was initially hurt from a body shot. His defense has a huge hole there; I watched tape of him in three other fights and that rib area is consistently exposed, even when he is in protect mode. Klitschko is a superb offensive fighter who will exploit that weakness, as well as the height advantage.

He throws shots from all angles, and will not reduce himself to a head hunter. If the opening is to the body, that is where Wladimir will attack.

Mormeck's only chance is to barrel in to Klitschko's chest to combat the huge reach advantage. He would be effectively attempting to use Klitschko's height against him.

Klitschko has become adept at keeping that punching distance ever since he was flattened by Lamon Brewster in 2004. This was the last time Wladimir lost a fight.

Even if Mormeck is able to control the distance, he hasn't demonstrated the type of punching power that would make you believe he's capable of capitalizing on his position.

He is an inflated cruiserweight in only his fourth bout at heavyweight. He hasn't scored a KO over any of his previous opponents in this weight class, and he hasn't KO'd any opponent since 2006. Of his 36 career victories, only 22 of them have come by way of KO.

All this makes his chances of scoring a KO seem less and less likely. Considering the reach and skill advantage Klitschko holds, a KO is his only chance, but it obviously isn't a very good one.

If the Klitschko brothers' dominance is to end at some point, it will not be today. Mormeck is overmatched in nearly every way.

That said, miracles do happen in this sport, and that is exactly what The Marksman needs.
