Gregg Williams: The St. Louis Rams Should Cut Ties with Disgraced Coordinator

Mike MoraitisJun 5, 2018

Never mind the negative impact this bounty scandal will have on Gregg Williams' name and career as a defensive coordinator. How about the negative impact it will have on Williams' new team, the St. Louis Rams?

Williams will certainly see discipline from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. It will almost certainly come down as a fine and/or suspension that will cause St. Louis' new DC to miss regular season games.

What impact will that have on the Rams?

A major one, in my opinion.

St. Louis has a young, inexperienced defense that got its brains beat in last year. No doubt coach Jeff Fisher will be looking to fill some much needed voids on the defensive side of the ball with the numerous draft picks the Rams could receive by trading their No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft.

So, that means Williams is in charge of a defense that needs a lot of work throughout the season. Not having him on the sidelines for any period of time will be devastating to the growth of this team.

St. Louis can't allow that to happen.

Not to mention, Williams is bringing a ton of negative press and distractions for the Rams that are not needed coming off a horrid season like the one they had in 2011. All focus should be on improving and not when the DC will be returning to the sidelines.

That is why the Rams need to cut ties with Williams. I understand the close relationship he has with Coach Fisher, but that has to be trumped by what's best for the team and what's best for the team is to have their defensive coordinator on the sidelines every game.

The Rams may not be able to control Williams' fate and his future in the NFL, but they can control the impact this situation will have on their team.

And they can do that by cutting ties with Williams altogether and starting fresh before it's too late.
