UFC on FX 2 Results: What We Learned from Court McGee vs. Constantinos Philippou

Vince CareyMar 2, 2012

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

Court McGee and Costa Philippou were both riding a lot of momentum going into the first bout of the main card on FX, but it was the striking and takedown defense of Philippou that made the difference in this fight.

McGee was going after Philippou the entire fight, but Costa was able to counter McGee’s big shots and stuff nearly all of his takedowns to earn the decision win.

Philippou is now riding a three-fight win streak and is quickly making a name for himself in the middleweight division, and McGee is now left to reevaluate his game in order to get back on track.

What We Learned About McGee

Court is extremely talented, but he is going to have to go and work on his wrestling if he wants to contend in the 185-pound division.

McGee’s striking is improving, but his ground game is his bread and butter, and his inability to drag Philippou to the mat seriously hurt his chance at winning this fight.

If McGee can continue to improve his striking and get back to using his ground game, he can still be a solid fighter in the middleweight division.

What We Learned About Philippou

The man can strike, and he proved it against McGee.

Philippou looked solid for the entirety of the bout, landing hard hooks and countering McGee’s wild strikes with relative ease, and it was enough to pick up the win.

A step up in competition is likely for Philippou, and if his striking and takedown defense are as good as they looked tonight he has a good chance at upsetting a higher ranked fighter.

What’s Next for McGee

Dan Miller, who has made a name for himself by taking on the best in the division on a moment's notice, would be a good fight for McGee, and if Court can beat him then he’ll instantly gain some credibility at 185.

What’s Next for Philippou

A bout with Ed Herman, who is on a decent win streak of his own, would be a nice fight to figure out where he stands in the division.
