Peyton Manning Rumors: No Team Suits Legendary QB's Needs Better Than KC Chiefs

Michael DixonMar 3, 2012

It is hard to keep track of where Peyton Manning might go, but the addition of the Kansas City Chiefs to the talks puts a realistically strong option on the table that no other team has.

Bill Williamson of ESPN labeled the Chiefs are the most realistic option for a simple yet important reason.

"

In addition to their interest and financial means, here’s another reason the Chiefs could be favorites to land Manning: They may be the best team interested in him. That would surely appeal to Manning when he is making his choice. I’m not sure many of the interested teams can offer Manning a better supporting cast.

You can't overemphasize that last point. In a previous blog, Williamson mentioned the other teams that would be in competition for his services, saying, "We put Kansas City, Miami and Washington as the teams with the best chances of signing Manning."

Just for the sake of sentiment, we can include the Colts in this discussion. It doesn't matter. If I were to tell you that the Chiefs, Dolphins, Redskins or Colts would win the Super Bowl next year, it would be impossible to pick any team other the Chiefs.

Not only were the Chiefs the best of those teams, but they play in a division that was won by a team with an 8-8 record. Heck, in 2010, the Chiefs won the AFC West. Remember that Tony Moeaki, Eric Berry and Jamaal Charles were all lost for the season by the end of Week 2 in 2011.

With every one of those players coming back next season and no team taking the bull by the horns and emerging as the class of that division, the Chiefs are easily the ones best-suited to win.

For Manning, that is all that should realistically matter. Think about this for a second. Why would he want to go to a team that's set up well to win in two or three seasons? That would be completely pointless. Manning won't be around that long, so being on a team that won't be really competitive until then does him no good at all.

The Colts were shown to be a mess last season and with some of those top players in free agency, 2012 isn't going to be any better. The Dolphins are showing improvement, but still play in a division with the Patriots and in a league where earning Wild Card spots is incredibly difficult. The Redskins play in a division with three viable playoff contenders and are hands-down the least-equipped team to compete.

That leaves the Chiefs. It only make sense for Manning to play somewhere where he can compete next year. A guy who will be 36 years old that just missed an entire season doesn't have a long future ahead of him.

As of right now, the Chiefs are the early favorites to win the AFC West next season. If Manning goes to them and is even a shell of his former self, they would easily be a playoff team, ready to compete for a championship.
