Lakers Trade Rumors: Kyle Lowry Would Be PG to Carry LA Back to NBA Finals

Adam WellsMar 3, 2012

Kyle Lowry would be the answer that the Los Angeles Lakers have been searching for. They just have to find the right package to give the Houston Rockets in order to make a deal happen.

According to Sam Smith of NBA.com, one deal that has been rumored is trading Pau Gasol for Lowry and Luis Scola.

"

The Lakers are woefully short in the backcourt and with depth and athleticism. He was in that aborted preseason deal to the Rockets, and their interest is said to remain the most significant. The deal that’s been most speculated is Gasol for Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry. The Rockets are said to be high on Goran Dragic and Jonny Flynn to replace Lowry, and the Lakers desperately need a point guard under Mike Brown’s system. This is a deal, denied for now, that benefits both teams and seems likely to be made.

If the Rockets are willing to make that deal, the Lakers should pounce on it as fast as they possibly can. Lowry is the best pure point guard potentially on the market—including Rajon Rondo.

While he has never been a great shooter, Lowry has gotten more confident with his shot selection and his percentage has slowly increased. He has been around 43 percent from the field since the start of the 2010 season. While he isn't good from the inside, he is shooting a very respectable 39 percent from beyond the arc.

More important than his shot, Lowry's ability to run an offense and get everyone around him involved is exactly what the Lakers have been missing at the point guard position.

If they were to get Scola to replace Gasol, along with Andrew Bynum and Kobe Bryant, they would have one of the most formidable offensive teams in the Western Conference.

And, oh by the way, Lowry also contributes 5.2 rebounds per game. He's in that second tier of point guards in the NBA, which is a perfect fit for this Lakers team.

They don't have to blow up the ship to get back to the NBA Finals. All they have to do is find a way to get Lowry to be their point guard before the March 15 trade deadline.
