Texas A&M Football: 5 Funniest Things Kevin Sumlin Has Ever Said

Kevin Sumlin has only been a head coach for five years, but the verbose coach has become a veritable quote machine.

Sumlin carries himself with a certain confidence that borders on cockiness. His outlook extends to his teams and often leads to them playing above their heads. As they head into the Southeastern Conference, Aggie fans hope that Sumlin keeps the swagger and jokes coming as the football team plays in the toughest conference in the nation.

This is a look at some of the funniest quotes that Sumlin has made during his head coaching career.

5. "But over the Course of Time, There Has Been Ideas Pitched Out."

Sumlin made that comment after he was asked whether he could offer any insight to his fellow Oklahoma coaches before their game with A&M in 2003.

Sumlin was the tight ends coach at Oklahoma at the time and had been the offensive coordinator of A&M when they upset No. 1 OU in 2002.

Oklahoma won the 2003 game 77-0.

4. "From Watching Practice, I Haven't Seen Vince Wilfork out There."

Sumlin made that quote in reference to the Aggies defense. He was able to observe practices before the bowl game.

Evidently he was not impressed with the Aggies talent on the defensive line. By signing Edmund Ray and gaining verbal commitments from Kerrick Huggins and Isaiah Golden, it would appear that Sumlin is serious about addressing that need on the interior of the defensive line.

The SEC has had more defense linemen drafted by the NFL the past five years than any other conference. If the Ags want to win in the SEC, they need to improve their talent on the defensive line.

3. "All of a Sudden We Got Here and They Answered the Phone."

Kevin Sumlin was discussing the difference between recruiting at Houston and recruiting at A&M.

He said that when he was at Houston the recruits, "threw our mail away or didn't return out calls."

When he got to A&M recruiting became a lot easier. As the coach of the only SEC school in Texas, Sumlin should find recruiting a little more enjoyable experience for years to come.

This was Sumlin's response to a question about his defensive philosophy.

Sumlin is a notoriously offensive-minded coach. Many of his detractors have pointed out that he did not have a good defense in any of his four seasons while head coach of Houston. Most ignore the fact that almost every team that Houston faced in Conference USA ran the spread offense.

Kevin Sumlin has never been the head coach at a school with the resources that Texas A&M has. He knows he has to have a championship defense in order to win the SEC, and he will go about assembling one as quickly as possible.
