Chicago Bears: Team Releases OT Frank Omiyale, DT Anthony Adams

Andrea HangstJun 7, 2018

It's no surprise that the Chicago Bears announced the release of veteran defensive tackle Anthony Adams, considering Adams himself let that information slip last week. Unexpected, however, was that the Bears chose to cut offensive tackle Frank Omiyale as well.

Well, almost unexpected. While it wasn't rumored, Omiyale's release isn't much of a surprise. The Bears have had constant struggles at offensive line, and Omiyale didn't help matters much.

He started at left guard, left tackle and right tackle during his three seasons with the Bears, appearing in every game in one way or another, including 2011, though he ultimately wound up losing his starting job.

Adams just wrapped his ninth year in the league but was active in just 10 games and had only two starts in 2011. A number of injuries, including a calf strain suffered in training camp, slowed him this past season and he didn't perform well in practices.

Adams was set to make a base salary of $1.9 million in 2012, and including bonuses, represented a $2.65 million cap hit. Omiyale's salary was to be $2.1 million, with a total of $2.8 million counting against the cap.

Releasing both players has saved the Bears $2.5 million in cap space after dead money is taken into account.
