NFL Combine 2012: Why Vontaze Burfict Was the Biggest Loser

Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict brought a reputation as a monster hitter who was physically imposing to the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine. He simply didn't live up to that billing, and his performance in Indianapolis likely cost him several million dollars.

Burfict measured in at 6'1" and 248 pounds, which was shorter than expected, but his overall size wasn't the problem. He ran an officially timed 40-yard dash of 5.09 seconds, then showed a pedestrian vertical leap of 30 inches and a below average broad jump of 104 inches. That may have been one of the more disappointing Combine performances in recent memory.

On top of that, Burfict reportedly turned off virtually everyone in attendance with his podium performance where he essentially blamed others for his on and off-field issues. With all the red flags Burfict's personality sends up, the guy needed an incredible showing during his workouts to put himself in consideration to be a first-round pick. He did the opposite. 

Burfict was an All-American in 2010 and had 228 tackles in three seasons for the Sun Devils. But despite being a terror on the field and one of the most intimidating players in college football, it now appears that he will be no better than a mid-round draft pick. 

Guys with attitude problems who happen to be average athletes are a dime a dozen. The only reason teams were willing to excuse Burfict's personality was because he appeared to be an exceptionally gifted football player.

Now that he has tested so poorly and has shown no evidence of growth or maturity, don't expect franchises to be willing to invest any serious money in him. He's clearly not worth the risk.

After such an awful showing in Indianapolis, there is no doubt that Burfict was the Combine's biggest loser.
