NFL Draft 2012: Young Studs Who Will Make Instant Impact
NFL fans, as a general rule, are an impatient bunch. Since the draft gets so much coverage, and we hear about how great the talent is, we want to see these young studs play and succeed right away.
This year's class looks like it is going to have a number of players that will start right away, but how much impact they have depends on how well they are able to acclimate themselves to the various intricacies of the game.
With the Scouting Combine over, there are a number of players that we have a much better read on. Here are the stars who will shine right away.
Dontari Poe, Defensive Tackle
This year's draft is stacked with strong defensive linemen who can get after the quarterback. But the defensive tackle position does not have a lot of depth after the first two or three players.
Poe is going to end up being the best of the bunch, and he showed why with a dominating, eye-opening performance at the Scouting Combine.
As great as Poe looked in Indianapolis, he is going to see his stock climb even higher because teams will start paying closer attention to his game film at Memphis.
Since he has elevated his stock so much, he is going to go somewhere that has a big weakness in the middle. Poe will start right away, and could have the kind of impact that Ndamukong Suh did in 2010.
David Wilson, Running Back
The hardest position to evaluate in terms of where they will be taken in the draft is running back. With the position becoming easier to fill later in the draft, or signing an undrafted player, teams are being conservative with their backs.
That said, Wilson was the best running back at the combine. He showed great burst and acceleration off the line in the 40-yard dash, and the biggest surprise came when he was asked to catch passes out of the backfield.
Once seen as the third running back in this class, after Trent Richardson and Lamar Miller, Wilson has the inside track on the No. 2 position. He has been healthy, productive and had a better-than-expected workout.
With running back being one of the easiest positions to get acclimated to, Wilson should get 250-300 carries for at least 1,000 yards.
Rueben Randle, Wide Receiver
Before the combine started, there were not a lot of people talking about Randle in the first round. He was getting some nibbles here and there from draft experts, but then they started to watch his tape and that all turned around.
You can see why he is moving up draft boards, with his 6'4", 210-pound frame and acceleration off the line, he has the potential to be a No. 1 receiver in the NFL.
He is not flawless—he tends to lose focus on the field when he isn't getting passes thrown his way. Put him in the right offense though, one that will allow him to succeed right away, and you have a star for the next decade.
If a team like Houston or San Francisco grabs him, he should get 40-50 receptions for 600 yards and at least five touchdowns in his rookie season.
