Miami Dolphins Rumors: Ryan Tannehill Not Worth Top 10 Pick

Michael DixonJun 7, 2018

If the Dolphins like Ryan Tannehill, that's fine—but if they're seriously talking about using their first-round pick on him, don't expect the era of mediocrity in Miami to end any time soon. That would be an absolute waste of the No. 8 pick.

David Hill of NBC Miami wrote that the Dolphins like the Texas A&M quarterback.

"

The Miami Dolphins have made no secret of their desire to acquire a top-flight quarterback this offseason. Now a new name is joining the mix of potential acquisition targets alongside Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn: former Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

To give you an idea of what that would cost the Dolphins, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald referenced and quoted Mike Mayock of the NFL Net:

"

Mayock expects Tannehill to go in the first 10 picks: "I like everything about him except he stares his receivers down."

"

Cite me whatever athleticism you want, there is no way that Tannehill is worth a Top 10 pick. The only two quarterbacks in this draft who are worth that are Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III.

In my most recent mock, I had the Dolphins trading down to the No. 18 pick to take Tannehill and also acquire extra picks. If that isn't a realistic option, then Miami needs to look elsewhere to fill their quarterback needs.

A stronger idea would be to go for Brock Osweiler or Nick Foles in the second or third round, letting whomever is taken play as a backup to Matt Moore for a year.

Make no mistake, I know Tannehill has good athleticism.

That just doesn't make up for the other flaws that can't be there for a Top 10 pick. If you're going to take a quarterback that high, you want him to step in immediately to lead the team. Sure, you have to accept some growing pains, but Tannehill's would be too great.

Look at the numbers he put up at Texas A&M and tell me what stands out.

Completions/Attempts  Completion Percentage   Yards   Touchdowns   Interceptions

There are a lot of nice numbers there, but I am looking at that touchdown-to-interception ratio of fewer than 2:1. If you can't even manage that against Big XIII defenses, the struggles are going to be too great in the NFL.

I certainly understand the desire to go for a quarterback, but this is not the target for Miami. Tannehill is not a Top 10-caliber pick. If the Dolphins can't make a trade down to get him, they must look elsewhere. Doing anything else would be another step in the wrong direction.
