Algarve Cup 2012: Alex Morgan Will Assert Her Dominance for US Women

Richard LangfordFeb 29, 2012

It is Alex Morgan's time to make the US Women's soccer team hers. She burst onto the scene in the past World Cup by adding a nice scoring punch off of the bench, and now she is ready to be a dominant force.

She wasted no time showing this in the 2012 Algarve Cup. She was definitely the heart of the American's attack in the their opening match as the US toppled Denmark 5-0.

Morgan scored two goals, and made her sure her presence was felt immediately.

She didn't waste any time setting the tone in that match, as she scored the contest's first goal 21 minutes in.

She then delivered a nice pass to Abby Wambach who netted it for the match's second goal. She added her second goal in the 82nd minute.

It is now clear that Morgan has quickly asserted herself as the heart of the offense.

In their last match leading up to the Algarve Cup, the US took down New Zealand 2-1. They had Morgan to thank for that outcome as well.

She scored the equalizer in the 88th minute, and then netted the winner in the third minute of stoppage time.

Morgan has always been a supremely gifted player, and now she is proving it on the biggest stage. She is just 22 years old, and is clearly coming into her own.

She is the most potent force on this squad, and should be for a long time.
