Vontaze Burfict Combine: How Linebacker Was Week's Biggest Disappointment
When Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict started off his experience at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine by blaming others for his disappointing 2011 season, I knew things were going to get interesting. Then came his workouts. Burfict went from a sure late first-round pick to barely even on the radar of NFL teams right now.
Burfict measured in at 6'1" and 248 pounds, but then ran an officially-timed 5.09-second 40-yard dash, had just a 30-inch vertical leap and a 104-inch broad jump. Previously hailed as an athletic beast, Burfict's decided lack of athleticism disappointed his supporters.
For a guy with Burfict's reputation for hitting late, getting into scuffles with coaches and teammates and generally having attitude problems, he needed to blow scouts away in order to be a first-round pick. Now his stock is sinking like a stone.
Burfict looked slow and stiff and at 6'1" was shorter than expected. Considering all we've heard about him being one of the most feared players in all of college football, his lack of overall athleticism is a major red flag. There is no doubt the Arizona State product is a heavy hitter, but if he can't actually get to guys at the next level, it won't matter how hard he can hit.
On top of all of that, one scout told CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman that he wouldn't touch Burfict because of his lack of discipline on and off the field.
After 228 tackles in three seasons and after being named an All-American in 2010, it looks like Burfict is destined to be no better than a mid-round draft pick this year. Thanks to a bad attitude and an awful week at the NFL Combine, he has no one but himself to blame.
