Michigan Football: 2013 Recruiting Class Sign of Things to Come for Wolverines

Wes ODonnellJun 4, 2018

Michigan Wolverines coach Brady Hoke had nearly his entire 2012 recruiting class committed before the 2011 season even started.

Then he went 11-2 during the season, won a BCS Bowl game and signed that top-10 class on February 1st.

Less than a month later he's off to yet another great start and, according to Tim Sullivan, a special writer for the Detroit Free-Press and editor of the Wolverine.com, the Wolverines picked up their 12th and 13th commitments to the 2013 class this past week:

The Wolverines picked up their 12th and 13th commits from Columbus (Ohio) Marion-Franklin wide receiver Jaron Dukes and Wexford (Pa.) North Allegheny offensive lineman Patrick Kugler.

Like nearly all of U-M’s commitments so far, both prospects cited the quality of the Wolverines’ coaching staff -- both as teachers of the game and as people -- in their reasons for committing.

"

Their "reasons" for committing are a great sign for the Maize and Blue. Under Rich Rodriguez the program went into not only disarray, but the basement of the Big Ten. They won an unthinkable six conference games during RichRod's three years in Ann Arbor while Hoke won six in his first year alone.

Sullivan also quotes the two newest commits as wanting to help the recruiting cause:

"

“Now that I’m in, I have to start helping to recruit guys to Michigan,” Kugler said. “I’m down to help with the recruiting effort for whoever I can.”

“I’m going to try to do the same thing,” Dukes agreed. “Now that I’m a part of Michigan, I want to be the best. I want to win.”

"

This is great news for any and all Michigan fans. It is one thing for Hoke and the rest of the staff to want a top recruit, but it is another for one of their peers to get in on the act.

Some of the top recruits in the 2013 class include quarterback Shane Morris, o-lineman Chris Fox, Kyle Bosch and Kugler, as well as defensive back Dymonte Thomas and tight end Jake Butt. All six players currently rank in the Rivals Top 100.

It certainly wouldn't be shocking to see the Wolverines fill up the 2013 class by July once again this year, and they can hope to follow it up with another BCS bowl win in 2012.
