NFL Combine 2012: Running Backs Who Stood out in Trent Richardson's Absence

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

Trent Richardson wasn't able to work out at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine and a few second-tier running backs took advantage of being in the spotlight.

Yes, I believe Richardson is in a class by himself and is the only runner I'd draft in the first round.

Among other reasons, I'm not a huge proponent of drafting a running back in Round 1 due to the passing renaissance in today's NFL. However, that doesn't mean I think they've become useless and shouldn't be looked at in the second round and beyond.

Remember, LeSean McCoy, Maurice Jones-Drew, Matt Forte and Ray Rice were all second-round picks.

Let's look at three runners who stood out in Richardson's absence.

Lamar Miller, Miami

Miller recorded the fastest 40-yard dash with an official 4.40 and didn't disappoint in the on-field drills. He was on par with all the rest of the prospects and displayed quick feet any time he needed to change direction.

He's only a redshirt sophomore, so he has time to learn the nuances of the position. However, he already possesses the stuff you can't teach; elite acceleration and top-end speed.

At 5'11'' and 212 pounds, Miller has the body to take on feature back duties at the next level. He should be an early pick on the second day.

Cyrus Gray, Texas A&M

When watching Gray on Sunday, I saw a nearly perfect workout. He seemed completely focused throughout the day. The Aggies star ran a respectable 4.47 in the 40 and put up 21 reps on the bench.

The on-field events are the best indicator of true football talent at the combine, and Gray certainly showed off his athleticism and overall technique in those drills.

He caught the ball with ease, was smooth in his cuts and looked the part of a change-of-pace, lightning bug runner. Gray weighed in at 5'10'' and 206 pounds.

He's a sleeper that could be taken in the mid-rounds and make some team extremely happy next season.

Ronnie Hillman, San Diego State

Due to his immense production over the last two seasons for the Aztecs (3,243 yards and 36 touchdowns), there was quite the buzz surrounding Hillman coming into the combine.

At 5'9'' and 200 pounds, many believed he could fit into that Darren Sproles mold in the NFL.

While he didn't blow everyone away, he was steady in his workout and proved that he is worth a second look.

He ran a 4.45 and had a 37 inch vertical—there's no doubting his explosiveness.

Hillman didn't make any major mistakes in the on-field drills and caught the ball well, which is something he'll certainly be asked to do at the pro ranks.
