Notre Dame Football Recruiting: Should Irish Worry About Neal's HS Transfer?

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

Davonte Neal transferred.

Now before Irish fans get all worried that their top recruit backed out on Notre Dame before he even stepped foot on the football field, they should know it was only high schools he decided to make a switch to.

The 4-star wide receiver decided to transfer during his final semester from Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Arizona to Phoenix Central. Nobody is really sure why he decided to change high schools and the Arizona Republic is calling it a personal matter.

While everybody is still trying to get to the bottom of this whole thing, the real question goes back to the college that he recently committed to. What does Notre Dame do about this and should they have any reason at all to be worried about it?

The first thing that comes to mind when a student transfers high schools is poor academics and if that's the case, then yes, the Irish should be extremely worried considering they're one of the top schools in the country when it comes to hitting the books.

"There are a lot of things, that from our standpoint, we're still getting information in on," Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said. "But he's going to have his academics taken care of, and that's really the most important things for us."

His grades may or may not contributed to his decision to switch high schools at the last minute, but if I were Notre Dame then I would have been worried about Neal a while ago. Like when he had an announcement planned and didn't show up to it, leaving hundreds of elementary school students on the floor of an auditorium wondering what just happened and why they were taken out of class for no reason.

He quickly built a reputation of being a diva player with that whole debacle and if anything, that should really have Irish coaches concerned. He came off as real selfish and egotistical, and rubbed many people within the college football community the wrong way.

We all know Neal is a fantastic football player and he may be a good kid that was just a little confused during the difficult times of the recruiting process. But this is a recruit that Notre Dame should keep an eye on, because there's something about him that doesn't quite feel right.
