FC Barcelona to Receive Payment from Cadena Cope for Damages to Club

Roberto Alvarez-GallosoJun 7, 2018

FC Barcelona is going to receive $268,250 in damages from Cadena Cope (Spanish Radio Station) secondary to a false accusation of doping. The news was reported in the Cadena Cope website and Reuters with a h/t to Yahoo Sports.

Cadena Cope did a report in which certain La Blaugrana players were accused of illegal doping. The report was later found to be false since it came from an unverified source who was supposedly based in Real Madrid.

Barca had demanded that Cadena Cope retract the story on the basis of its lack of merit. Cadena Cope agreed to the demand from La Blaugrana.

La Blaugrana deserves to be congratulated for defending its honor against certain reporters who just wanted a story. Cadena Cope made itself an unreliable source for its dependence on an unidentified source for its story.

The lesson to be learned from this incident is that sports reporters need to be careful about their reporting. The sports writers must verify their sources and check many times before publishing an article.

It is hoped that Cadena Cope learned its lesson from the experience and will be responsible.
