Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Floyd Will Be a Fine 1st-Round Pick

Giorgos KassakosJun 7, 2018

Forget about Vontaze Burfict, Luke Kuechly, Devon Still and Dontari Poe. Forget about adding a linebacker or a defensive tackle in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. The Philadelphia Eagles could get a player with great potential in Michael Floyd.

No, I haven’t lost my mind—yet. The Eagles need to solidify their defense and they could certainly use a linebacker more than a wide receiver. Even a defensive tackle looks like a bigger need than a new target for Michael Vick. However, Michael Floyd might be worth the shift to “plan B.”

Floyd is regarded as one of the top wideout prospects of the 2012 NFL draft. Many mock drafts had him drafted in the Top 15 as the second wide receiver behind Justin Blackmon. His stock slowly began to decrease with Kendall Wright and Alshon Jeffery emerging as top options, but the NFL scouting combine was a big surprise.

Floyd had a fantastic workout and displayed various skills. He was impressive at the 40-yard dash, finishing in 4.47 seconds. Additionally, he showed steady hands and was very precise while running routes.

Philadelphia could use a 6’3” receiver, especially in the end zone. Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson (if he stays) and Jason Avant are not so big and Riley Cooper never climbed the depth chart.

The Eagles will probably ignore Floyd in the first round, but he won’t be available by the time they get to name their second draft pick.

As much as I hope they draft Dont’a Hightower or Vontaze Burfict, I wouldn’t be disappointed if they passed these guys for Michael Floyd—especially if Jackson is not re-signed and no adequate replacement is brought in.
