Dereck Chisora Suspended Indefinitely Following Post-Match Brawl

Jun 7, 2018

It was just a matter of time before British heavyweight-boxer Dereck Chisora was disciplined for his spat with David Haye.

On Tuesday, Chisora's punishment was handed down. The Guardian has the scoop:

Chisora brawled with Haye at a news conference following his loss to Vitali Klitschko on Feb. 18. Chisora has lost three of his past four fights.

What It Means

Chisora had to be suspended for his actions, so today's ruling comes as no real surprise.

Chisora's brawl with Haye (which was recapped nicely by The Telegraph) was an utter embarrassment. It was bad enough that it involved petty trash talk, but things spiraled out of control when Chisora got out of his seat and confronted Haye. It wasn't long before there was a scuffle, blood was drawn, and Chisora could be heard shouting that he was going to shoot Haye.

Chisora had already done enough to embarrass himself prior to his brawl with Haye. Before his fight with Vitali Klitschko, he made headlines for slapping his opponent at the pre-match weigh-in and then for spitting water in Wladimir Klitschko's face in the ring before the fight.

Per a further report from The Guardian, the WBC is not going to reconsider Chisora's reinstatement until he has undergone an anger management course.

Frankly, Chisora is lucky the WBC is leaving the door open at all.

What Happens Next

Chisora is not going to escape the damage his brawl with Haye has done to his reputation, but he presumably will end up back in the ring before too long. He merely has to prove that he can be gentlemanly, and his suspension will be revoked.

If it comes to that, the question will become if Chisora can stay gentlemanly.

The next question will be whether he can start winning fights again.
