Lakers Rumors: Ramon Sessions Would Be Best PG Option for Los Angeles
While the Los Angeles Lakers are still trying to figure out where they fit in the Western Conference hierarchy, it is becoming increasingly likely that they make some kind of move to upgrade the point guard position before the March 15 trade deadline.
According to Peter Vescey of the New York Post, the two most likely candidates are Ramon Sessions from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Jameer Nelson from the Orlando Magic. The Nelson proposal would obviously seem to include that center everyone is after.
"They’re determined to acquire a point guard sooner than two weeks from now. If it’s a multi-player transaction, Pau Gasol will be sacrificed. Should the Magic change their mind about accepting Andrew Bynum for Howard (Pau’s inclusion might do it), Jameer Nelson would almost have to be part of the package unless an above-average ball-handler can be obtained elsewhere.
That someone could be Ramon Sessions ($4.2 million/$4.5 million). The Lakers are doing some fast talking to the Cavaliers, who are swamped by calls, as are the Kings. Sacramento leads the league in cap room, $9.4 million, whereas Cleveland has $7.1 million.
"
While Howard would be the big fish to drop in this equation, the Lakers would be worse off with that deal. Instead of having three stars and no roster depth, they would have two superstars and no depth.
On the other hand, Sessions can presumably be had from the Cavaliers and the Lakers wouldn't have to give up anything of extreme value on their roster.
While the Lakers are scrambling to figure out what their best—and most likely—course of action should be, they need to realize that breaking up the current nucleus is not going to make them any more formidable than they are right now.
Sessions is not a star at the point, but he is better than Nelson and can help make Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Kobe Bryant better than they have been this season.
Another thing that should make their decision easier are the reports that Howard has no intention of playing with Bryant long-term.
Point guard is a more pressing position of need for the Lakers than center, and Sessions is the best potential option available to them.
