Tottenham Injury Crisis: Spurs Forced to Recall Adam Smith

Frank WagnerJun 7, 2018

As you probably know, the North London Derby did not go incredibly for Tottenham.

The fallout of the match has not been much better.

With a difficult fixture against Manchester United at White Hart Lane coming up on Sunday, Tottenham could be without many key players.

Scott Parker is sure to miss because of a suspension he incurred from a red card received at the Emirates this past weekend.

However, what bodes worse for Tottenham's future is the possibility of missing Kyle Walker.

Walker, who has made himself a staple of Spurs defense this season, picked up an injury this past weekend.

The right back has impressed this season and has even made himself an almost automatic selection for England at Euro 2012, but has pulled out of England's friendly with Netherlands this Wednesday.

Last season, Walker was on loan at Aston Villa while Spurs played Alan Hutton and Verdan Corluka at right back.

However, due to Walker's form, both Hutton and Corluka have both been sold since.

Hence, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp had no clear option for right back if Walker were to miss matches.

Thus, Redknapp was forced to recall Adam Smith from his loan to Leeds for extra cover.

Smith's loan deal was done at the end of January; the defender had already made three appearances for Leeds prior to his being recalled.

The 20-year-old is also a starter for England's U-21 team in their quest to qualify for the European Championships.

While Smith does have a lot of potential, his recall shows a bit of desperation on the part of Spurs.

If Walker were to miss lots of time, other options for Tottenham include giving Michael Dawson Younes Kaboul's centre back position and shifting Kaboul to right back.

Smith will probably not get playing time barring emergency, but the loss of one key player has already forced Spurs into a bit of a tough situation.
