Wrestlemania 28: Secondary Matches Needed to Complete Stacked Card

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

As it is currently constructed, WrestleMania 28 looks as if it has the potential to be one of the better cards in the event's history. The main event is stacked with the likes of John Cena vs. The Rock, Triple H vs. The Undertaker and CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho, and all that is missing is a strong undercard.

If WrestleMania 28 is truly going to compete with the best ever, then it has to be strong throughout. The triple-header main event as well as Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus certainly form an excellent skeleton. Now all that is needed are a few more meaningful matches to beef up the card.

There are a ton of excellent superstars who aren't yet involved in a storyline, so there are tons of possibilities. Here are three undercard matches that absolutely must happen in order to make WrestleMania 28 an instant classic.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match

Over the past two years, the Money in the Bank pay-per-view has been among the best cards in WWE. With the MITB event no longer on the calendar for 2012, however, the ladder match has to take place somewhere. It's possible that the WWE is doing away with it completely, but it's a pretty popular concept. Because of that, it makes perfect sense to put the match back where it originated: WrestleMania.

Money in the Bank is a great way to get mid-card and unused upper-card talent on the show. There are several such wrestlers who have nothing going at the moment, so it would be great to see them in the match. My choices for the match would include Randy Orton, The Miz, Mark Henry, Christian, Alberto Del Rio and a returning Rey Mysterio (if healthy). That encompasses all the championship-caliber performers who need something to do. I would give the win to The Miz since he has been getting passed off as an afterthought as of late.

Kane vs. Zack Ryder No Holds Barred Match

Kane made his devastating return after losing an ambulance match to John Cena as he unceremoniously took out the entire WWE tag-team division on RAW. Since Cena has clearly shifted gears to The Rock, Kane needs to look elsewhere. The obvious choice for his WrestleMania opponent would be Zack Ryder. Kane has "injured" Ryder on numerous occasions as he has thrown him through the stage, off the stage and off a loading dock. Because of that it stands to reason that Ryder wants revenge.

As unsuccessful as the Kane vs. Cena vs. Ryder feud was, this could be a great payoff. Ryder would obviously enter the match as a huge underdog, but he would have a chip on his shoulder. I really enjoy Ryder's character and have been a big supporter of his for a long time, but he would benefit from a bit of a mean streak. If he can find a way to beat Kane in a no holds barred match while displaying a ruthless attitude, then it could go a long way toward making him a possible main-event performer down the line.

Tag Team Turmoil Match for Tag Team Championships

The current state of the WWE tag-team division is dire, but if given an opportunity to shine at WrestleMania, great strides could be made. Over the past couple weeks it seems as though an effort has been made to build new teams with Kofi Kingston and R-Truth forming an alliance, as well as Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger teaming back up. The current champions, Primo and Epico, are a very solid traditional team as well.

With those teams in place and having had an entertaining triple-threat match on RAW, a Tag Team Turmoil match at 'Mania seems like a great fit. The best way to do it would be a gauntlet-style match starting with two teams and a new team emerging after each elimination. The three teams who wrestled on RAW should be involved, as should the Usos and a few blasts from the past to get the crowd hot. With the Road Dogg already in the fold, a one-night reprisal of the New Age Outlaws would be incredible. A team like "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and Sgt. Slaughter would also be great. Ultimately, it would be a vehicle to get Primo and Epico and the division as a whole over.
