Robert Griffin III NFL Combine: Stellar Performance Will Lead to No. 2 Pick

Donald WoodFeb 28, 2012

While there still have been serious questions raised about how well Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III will transition of the NFL, his performance at the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine has certain teams ready to go all-in.

The St. Louis Rams sit in the No. 2 slot in the NFL draft behind the Indianapolis Colts, who have made it perfectly clear they are taking Stanford standout and future NFL star Andrew Luck. That means teams that want to ensure that they select Griffin will have to trade up to No. 2 overall.

It won’t be cheap either.

Teams like the Atlanta Falcons last season and the New York Giants in 2004 made it clear that they will give up whatever they need to ensure that they got the player they wanted. Whoever wants RGIII will be paying the same price or even more.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter is reporting on Twitter about the Eli deal and how it would take a similar package, if not more, to get into the No. 2 spot:

According to NFL.com, RGIII officially ran a 4.41 in the 40-yard dash, which is the third-fastest time in combine history only behind Michael Vick and Reggie McNeal. While most fans and scouts knew that Griffin was fast, that’s some real track speed.

Add in the fact that Griffin dominated both the broad jump and vertical jump and RGIII is the pure athlete that teams love. The real questions will be answered when he starts playing against defenses that aren’t from the Big 12.

With success in every drill he ran and a perfect score from many teams during his interview process, Griffin has ensured himself that he will be picked at No. 2 overall when the draft comes around.

The only question will be who is selecting there.
