Making News: Auburn Sports Update

Deric WinslettJan 8, 2009

The Auburn Tigers are targeting another Oklahoma State assistant coach.

During his time with the Duke Blue Devils, Glenn Spencer coached John Talley to first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in both 2005 and 2006. He performed exceptionally on the recruiting front for Duke.

Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy hired Spencer as the Cowboys defensive line coach in 2008.

Tiger Basketball

Auburn Lady Tigers are set for SEC play when they travel tonight to South Carolina to play the Gamecocks, who are 8-5 on the season.  The women’s basketball team is 15-0 and ranked ninth in the country.  This pre-SEC start is the best in 20 years.

"I feel really good about our schedule," Fortner said. "I would have probably liked to have more home games, but that's OK because that road really bonds your team and it gets them tougher. I like the schedule (because it) worked in our favor as far as when the games came—the tough ones, the easier ones. It was a good mesh of teams. I feel real good about going into the conference schedule."

Auburn at South Carolina tips off at 7pm EST.

The Men’s basketball team will also be traveling to Columbia, SC this weekend to open the SEC against USC. Auburn will place a seven-game, five-week winning streak on the line. The Tigers might be ready to make something happen in the SEC this year.

Auburn beat Tulane 78-53 last Saturday generating their longest winning streak since the 2003-04 season. The last Auburn loss was a seven-point defeat at Xavier back in December.

Recruiting Heating Up

According to Phillip Marshall of Auburn Undercover, Under Armour All-American Rueben Randle, rated the nation’s No. 1 wide receiver by ESPN/Scouts Inc., has scheduled an official visit to Auburn this weekend, sources confirmed to AuburnUndercover.com on Wednesday night.

Rueben Randle is the top receiver prospect in the nation and one of the top prep prospects overall.  He had planned to visit Oklahoma State this weekend. Instead, Auburn’s new running backs coach, and former OSU assistant, Curtis Luper has convinced Randle to take an official visit Auburn.

Not only is Auburn raiding the pantry of assistant coaches from OSU’s Mike Gundy’s staff, the Tigers are making moves to sway some recruits.  All is fair in love and war, in this case college football.

More to Come

Auburn is making inroads with other super athletic and highly rated recruits—some that may surprise you.  There will be more to come later when I finish my story that will focus on Auburn recruiting.
