MMA: 5 UFC Fighters Fans Obsess Over

Joe ChaconJun 7, 2018

We've all had conversations with other fans regarding our favorite sports teams. Within the first couple of minutes you can tell if the person you are talking to is a fan, or a rabid freak who is so obsessed with his or her team that they would jump in front of a bus to save the team logo from being run over.

The UFC has fighters on their roster whom fans treat the same way. There are rational people like you and me (you are rational, right?) that enjoy talking about the fighters we pull for each time they fight.

Then there are those who get so defensive about their favorite fighter that they turn a good conversation into a shouting match.

These are the fighters UFC fans obsess over the most.

5. Brock Lesnar

Yes, it is true that Brock Lesnar no longer fights in the UFC. Yes, it is also true that fans are still debating whether or not he deserved a title shot so soon.

It's time to move on, Lesnar fans. He is going to be remembered for "what could have been" instead of "what he was".

Unfortunately, health issues appeared to cut Lesnar's career short. He brought such a buzz with him to each event and fans will miss that the most.

Lesnar ended his UFC career with a 4-3 record.

4. Chael Sonnen

How many rabid fans would Chael Sonnen have without the trash talking? We'll never have to worry about that because he will never stop talking...and we are fine with that.

Sonnen has a cult-like following that will catch you off-guard. A few weeks ago I predicted (and failed miserably) that he would say something on the FOX broadcast that would get the network fined.

I was quickly reminded via tweets, emails, and private messages that Sonnen calculates everything he says and would never get the network fined.

It is advised that you approach a Chael Sonnen fan with caution.

3. Jon Jones

Jon Jones has soared into UFC fame unlike any fighter we have seen. The reason MMA fans are obsessed with Jones is because of his success, unique skill set and the impression that he is an overall good guy.

Now, there is a long way for him to go, but today he is the ideal UFC fighter. He goes about his business the right way, he has been respectful of his opponents and most importantly, he is just flat out a great fighter.

It is hard to have a conversation about the UFC without mentioning "Bones". Why would you want to?

2. Anderson Silva

4 of 5

Anderson Silva has held onto the UFC middleweight belt for over five years now. Whether you love him or hate him, chances are he is part of your UFC conversation.

While fans here in the United States may talk about him a lot, his fans in Brazil obsess over him.

I've noticed lately that saying Anderson Silva is overrated has become a trendy thing amongst so-called fans on message boards. The man has not lost a fight since 2006, what do you mean, he is overrated?

The quintessential image of obsession will come into complete focus when Silva fights Chael Sonnen in Brazil later this year.

1. Georges St. Pierre

5 of 5

Think back to the last time you watched a UFC fight and there was an uninterested female in the room. Chances are you heard something like, "He is so hot."

How about that conversation you had last week when you were out on a date. She asked what hobbies you have and you mentioned you really like to follow the UFC. She replies with, "Oh! That one guy, GSP, I like him a lot."

Yes, Georges St. Pierre has a monopoly on the female UFC fans.

The level of intrigue, obsession or whatever else you can call it for St. Pierre is well above anything any other fighter receives.

He brought the sport to Canada and continues to be one of the most well-respected fighters all over the world.

Even though GSP will go over a year without fighting, he is still at the forefront of most UFC related conversations.

It is important for all MMA fans that GSP heal correctly and he come back to fight for another three to five years. He brings such a diverse fan base with him and it would be a shame if he did not to come back 100 percent from his ACL injury.
