NFL Combine 2012 Results: Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck Live Up to Hype
Stanford's Andrew Luck and Baylor's Robert Griffin III have long been considered the top two quarterbacks in the 2012 NFL Draft, but at the NFL's Scouting Combine the two men separated themselves from the pack even further by performing beyond expectations.
While neither signal-caller threw in Indianapolis, they both tested exceptionally well athletically. On Sunday Griffin smoked the competition while blazing to a 4.41 second time in the 40-yard dash. Luck then ran a 4.59 unofficially (the same time as Cam Newton last year) but it was later adjusted to an official 4.69.
The fact that Luck, who is regarded as a prototypical pocket quarterback, ran so fast was a shock to many. Luck also posted a broad jump of 10 feet, four inches (just two inches shy of Newton's mark in 2011) and his vertical jump of 36 inches was actually better than Newton's (35 inches).
Many experts thought Griffin might measure shorter than his listed height but he dispelled any worries about his size when he came in at 6'2" and 233 pounds. He also showed off vertical leap of 39 inches.
The kind of athleticism displayed by both quarterbacks would have been impressive in any player participating. What the duo showed was that even without throwing the ball they can make headlines. That means this could be a special pair—the kind we're talking about for the next decade.
Luck and Griffin weren't shy and actually showed up to perform at the combine. That's a big deal in itself.
Right now Luck, Griffin and USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil have separated themselves as the top three players in this draft class. And I wouldn't be surprised if they end up being the top three players selected on April 26.
