Wide Left: NBA All-Stars, Oscars, NFL Combine, Daytona 500 Rain & More

Dan LevyJun 7, 2018

The funny thing about this headline: it's not just an SEO dream for this Monday. Nick and I actually talk about all of those things.

First, we cover the NBA All-Star Game as much as two people can cover any All-Star Game. We ask you, what sport has an all-star game that's closest to the actual sport? Is it baseball, or do the last six minutes of the NBA's game trump nine innings?

We discuss the NASCAR rainout and how much of an audience the Daytona 500 will lose by running on a Monday. Will people take the day off from work? Will offices let people watch? We're talking about close to 15 million people looking for a place to watch this race today.

Oh, and what's the deal with Lenny Kravitz. The guy must have the best agent in the world.

HELLO, THE MEDIA: A few Phillies beat writers combined to pen a book this off-season about Philadelphia's vaunted pitching rotation. We discuss the idea of writing a book while covering a beat. Do you hold some stories back? Do you have to disclose if the interviews are for the book or for your day job? We'll get to the bottom of this with the authors soon, but for now, Nick and I try to balance the business side of double-dipping.

UPON FURTHER REVIEW: We talk about the NFL Combine! The only thing less exciting than watching the combine has to be listening to two guys talk about the merits of watching the combine. We do, however, cover the over-indulgent promotion by the NFL Network of Rich Eisen running the 40. We get it…he runs the 40 every year. It's funny. But the over-kill by the NFL has made a pretty cool media-nerd event into something, well, stupid. They've ruined the joke, and now it's just a guy running the 40 in a suit. Ho-hum.

OSCARS: Congrats to Bret McKenzie for winning an Oscar. O, and the rest of the people there. And Billy Crystal.
