Liverpool Transfer Rumours: 5 Defenders Linked to Anfield
After having a fairly strong-looking defensive lineup this season, you could be forgiven for thinking that Liverpool don't need any new defenders.
The aging Jamie Carragher has been factored into the Liverpool equation by the acquisition of Sebastian Coates, and the Skrtel/Agger pairing has looked good.
Jose Enrique has slotted into the left back role as though he has been there all his life, and Glen Johnson at right back is the current England first choice.
So do Liverpool need any defenders at the moment?
Regardless of any thoughts you or I have, there are certainly ones linked with the club right now.
Here are the five latest reported to be on the Reds' radar.
Seamus Coleman
1 of 6Back in November, Liverpool were linked to Everton's Seamus Coleman for an £8 million fee.
The move never materialized but Kenny Dalglish may look at the deal again during the summer in a bid to strengthen defensively.
Coleman is versatile enough that he could be deployed on the right side of midfield should the need arise.
Coleman has been beset by injury issues this season as hasn't played in the league since December.
Diego Godin
2 of 6Uruguayan defender Diego Godin has been linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid and was a reported Liverpool target last summer.
Godin is a centre back by trade so could be seen as a replacement for Jamie Carragher, but with Sebastian Coates waiting in the wings it is unclear what his role would be or why Liverpool needed him.
Insidefutbol is suggesting a summer move could be on the cards.
Alvaro Dominguez
3 of 6Insidefutbol also states Liverpool are looking to sign Atletico's Alvaro Dominguez in a double swoop.
With Luis Enrique dominating the left back position this season, Dominguez is another strange player to be linked with the Merseyside club as is main position would be left back or centre back.
There is no fee mentioned for the player who has now been called up to the Spanish national team.
Mauricio Isla
4 of 6Mauricio Isla currently plies his trade at Italian club Udinese and has been the subject of much transfer speculation with Liverpool of late.
In fact, Isla's agent has declared that the Merseyside club have made inquiries about the player for a summer move and it is believed the versatile defender is valued at around £8 million.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa
5 of 6Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa currently plays for French club Montpellier in Ligue Une and is 22 years of age.
Yanga-Mbiwa is a French under-21 International and is believed to be valued at approximately £5 million according to sportsnewsireland.
The youngster would seem a more believable signing for Liverpool with Agger and Skrtel looking like a solid central defensive pairing this season.
Bayern Munich are also mentioned as being interested in the player who has apparently declared he would prefer a move to England.
Afterthoughts
6 of 6So it seems there could be a defensive shakeup come the summer, despite the solidarity shown under Dalglish's return to management.
Coates hasn't featured as much for Liverpool as I would have expected by now, so perhaps there are flaws in his game that the coaching staff are working hard to rectify before pushing him in at the deep end.
If a player is of a good standard then it is never a bad thing to have them sign for your club, despite whether his role is already locked down by another player.
Strength in depth is what a club needs to be successful, so perhaps that is how these potential signings should be looked at.
