NBA Rumors: Raymond Felton Would Give Los Angeles Lakers Exactly What They Need

Justin WeltonJun 5, 2018

I have said from the start of the 2011-12 season that the Los Angeles Lakers need to add a scoring guard or point guard to solidify their chances of winning another NBA Championship.

Raymond Felton may not lead the Lakers to the promised land, but he gives them a better opportunity than what they have right now. According to Roland Lazenby, the Lakers have interest in the point guard.

Los Angeles is 22nd in points scored per game and are 14th in offensive efficiency. Matt Barnes is the second-leading scorer who isn’t a power forward or center on the Lakers roster. He averages just seven points per game. Steve Blake averages 6.8 and Derek Fisher chips in with 5.5 points per game.

Felton is having an off-year this season, shooting 37.6 percent from the floor—that’s the worst of his six-year career.

He has proven that he can score around 11-14 points per game, but most importantly, he can get you six assists per game.

Kobe Bryant needs help scoring. The Lakers are a better team when he isn’t shooting 24 times a game like he has this season. That’s just one reason why the Lakers are 20-14 on the campaign.

Felton would get the ball out of Bryant’s hands and will spread the love around to others. I’m not suggesting that Bryant shouldn’t average 19, 20 shots per game, but I am saying that adding another player who can make things happen with the ball in his hands is a good thing.

Maybe the addition would open up some room for Barnes and Blake from the perimeter, allowing their numbers to rise.

Los Angeles can’t win a championship this year if they don’t add a player to help Bryant in the scoring department. Adding a point guard, which they desperately need given their lack of talent at that position, would allow the Lakers to be a more complete unit.

With Felton’s proven ability to score the rock at a decent clip and feed others, the addition would make sense for the Lakers going forward.
