Andrew Luck Combine: Stud Prospect Does Impossible and Improves Elite Status

Richard LangfordFeb 26, 2012

One of the most surefire No. 1 overall selections of all time just enhanced his value. This was no easy task, considering the superlatives being bandied about in regard to Luck, but his impressive display of athleticism has done just that.

To understand just how impressive Luck's numbers were, let's compare them to Cam Newton. Luck is a little smaller than Newton, but their sizes are comparable.

Unofficially, Luck ran a 4.59 in the 40. That time was later adjusted to 4.69. Newton posted a 4.59 last year.

Luck's broad jump was 10'4" compared to Cam's 10'6". His vertical jump was 36" compared to Newton's 35".

What makes this so impressive is that Newton went into last year's combine recognized as an athletically gifted QB whose passing game was raw, and that was enough for him to go No. 1 overall.

Luck entered this combine with the reputation as a supremely gifted passer. His athleticism is an afterthought because he seldom needs to display it.

It is clear now that Luck has all the athleticism he needs. Michael Marot of the Associated Press, via NWI.com, offers up this quote from the NFL Network's Mike Mayock:

"

I think what was surprising to some people was how athletic Andrew Luck is. I think a lot of people might be surprised to compare his measurables to Cam Newton from a year ago. Cam Newton hits you over the head with a sledge hammer as far as his athletic ability; it's pretty obvious, whereas with Andrew Luck, it's sneaky athletic.

"

Luck is the real deal. He has the kind of athleticism that makes a QB get noticed, and he has a passing game good enough that he doesn't need it.
