NHL Trade Deadline: Blackhawks Wise to Pursue Defensive Help for Playoff Push

The Chicago Blackhawks have one last chance to bolster their lineup heading into the NHL Playoffs, so a move to improve their defense would be a wise decision for the Western Conference team hanging by a thread.

The trade deadline will pass on February 27th, so the team is running out of time to make any moves that will really help them at least hold their sixth spot in the playoffs.

According to TotalHockey.com's Andy Strickland, the team has been showing interest Dallas Stars' veteran Sheldon Souray and the Philadelphia Flyers' Matt Carle.

While the Hawks shouldn't give up any significant pieces, they could sacrifice a few prospects or late-round picks to land a player who could solidify the team to make another Stanley Cup run.

The Hawks would be foolish to give up any of the players on their roster, so it is wise of them to go after expendable veterans such as Souray or Carle.

The team was looking very strong early on this season, but clearly defensive struggles have held them back from finding success.

One problem has been the play of goalie Corey Crawford, who has allowed a total of 123 goals this season. They don't want to move on from Crawford, as he is a young talent that can really become something, so adding another force to their defense will hopefully help Crawford in the later parts of the season.

The Hawks have proven that they can play at a very high level, but they now need the defense to be able to stay strong to make a serious title run.

The Western Conference is tough, and there are some serious teams on their tails, so it is important to make some sort of move that will put this team in position to finish the year on a strong note.
