UFC 144 Results: Why Rampage vs. Rich Franklin Makes Sense
Leading up to last night's fight with Ryan Bader, former UFC champion Rampage Jackson seemed more fired up over another fighter's commentary than his opponent.
Part of Fuel TV's commentary team, former middleweight champion Rich Franklin called into question Rampage's motivation following his less than stellar weigh-in results. Rampage took great offense to Franklin's words and, following Bader's beat down, should consider facing Franklin in the Octagon.
With both fighters on the tail ends of their careers, title runs are unlikely for either Rampage or Franklin, making marquee fights the only viable and exciting options left. A battle between the two would be a great fight for the fans and should finally motivate Rampage.
Suffering back-to-back losses to two of the UFC's fastest rising stars, including current champion Jon Jones, Rampage just can't compete against the ever evolving talent that is taking over the sport, let alone the light-heavyweight division. Having already battled some of the biggest names in the sport, Franklin remains one of the handful of veterans that Rampage hasn't faced.
For Franklin, this would be a great fight to go out on as a win over Rampage would solidify his status as one of the best in the promotion's history. Rampage would be a tough opponent to shake the ring rust off for, seeing as how Franklin hasn't fought since February of last year and is still recovering from surgery.
Regardless, a veteran like Franklin should be able to turn it on at least one more time against the former light-heavyweight champ.
Stylistically this also makes for an exciting bout. Rampage, a solid wrestler known for his knockout power, would test Franklin's chin. Conversely, Franklin's more technical style of boxing could prove to be the deciding factor should he implement a counter-fight game plan.
If the UFC were to make this match, it's a virtual no lose situation as the fans will be happy, the revenue would flow in and, more importantly, both Rampage and Franklin would have an opportunity to get a big win or end their careers in a bang.
