Daytona 500: Drivers Who Will Thrive in Chaos of Great American Race

Richard LangfordMay 31, 2018

This is going to be a wild, wreck-filled Daytona 500, and that certainly favors a certain type of driver.

Obviously, that driver has to be talented, but they also have to be at their best when things are going haywire all around them because that is exactly what is going to happen here.

We've seen it the past two weeks these guys have spent at Daytona. They are running in tight packs, and the cars are loose with lower spoilers. That makes for lots of passing and lots of wrecks.

Here are three drivers that will thrive in those circumstances.

Kyle Busch

There isn't another driver alive right now that likes it more when things get wild than Kyle Busch. It seems to bring out the best.

It is when things are more slowed and controlled when Busch starts to get a little funny in his head.

But we need look no further than the shootout last weekend to see what Busch is capable of in these conditions.

One way or another, Busch is going to be a huge factor in this race.

Smoke loves racing in tight quarters. He is absolutely fearless and can pull off passes when no one else would even think there is room to get through.

Now seems like as a good a time as any to view his amazing run in the final race last year.

Stewart loves high stakes, big pressure and wide-open racing. This is not a track where Stewart has had a lot of success, but that could be about to change.

Gordon is talented. No one can deny that. He is also a cool customer and a poised driver. Gordon is not going to lose his head in any situation, and the chances are, that whatever comes up, he has been in that position before.

Gordon has a strong car, a good team, and he is ready to make a run back to the top of the NASCAR world.
