NFL Combine 2012: Prospects That Will Be Draft Steals After a Poor Combine

Gary DavenportFeb 26, 2012

The 2012 NFL Scouting Combine is well underway, and as quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers take the field Sunday for workouts, they bring with them the end of the combine for players on the offensive side of the ball.

As is the case every season, there are some players that have stepped up big in Indianapolis, while for others, the trip hasn't exactly gone as planned.

Many of the players that performed poorly at the combine will see their draft day stock take a tumble, and for this group, that may actually be a blessing in disguise for the NFL squad that drafts them.

Mike Adams: OT, Ohio State

1 of 4

Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams probably wishes he'd never heard of Indianapolis, much less been there. The 6'7", 323-pound senior managed only 19 reps on the bench press and failed to place in the top five at his position in any of the combine's drills.

Adams' status as a potential first-round pick took a big hit with his poor showing at Lucas Oil Stadium, but there are years worth of tape that indicate that Adams is a capable blocker who could be an excellent value for NFL teams in the second round of April's draft.

Alshon Jeffery: WR, South Carolina

2 of 4

Wide receiver Alshon Jeffery of South Carolina was one of the more talked-about players in the nation heading into the combine. Although Jeffery dispelled rumors that he was out of shape by checking in at a svelte 6'3" and 216-pounds, doubts still remain about his straight-line speed after Jeffery chose not to run in Indy.

These doubts could well cause Jeffery to fall from the first round of the upcoming NFL draft. If Bleacher Report NFL Draft lead writer Matt Miller is correct in his assessment that Jeffery is a top 10 talent, then he would be an absolute steal for the team that rolls the dice on him in the second round.

Orson Charles: TE, Georgia

3 of 4

Georgia tight end Orson Charles was another collegiate star who chose to forgo running the 40-yard dash at this year's combine, which was curious given that he's widely considered one of the fastest players in the nation at his position.

Charles' decision not to run likely squandered any chance that the 6'2", 251-pound junior had of establishing himself as the top tight end available in this year's draft class. But as Charles showed with an outstanding 35 reps on the bench press, the former Bulldogs standout certainly isn't lacking in the athleticism department.

Brock Osweiler: QB, Arizona State

4 of 4

With Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin of Baylor electing not to throw at the combine and Texas A&M signal caller Ryan Tannehill nursing an injured foot, the door was opened for quarterbacks such as Arizona State's Brock Osweiler to bolster their draft stock this year.

However, Osweilier is reportedly dealing with an injured foot of his own, and after skipping drills in Indianapolis, the lanky junior still finds himself stuck at the back end of the top five quarterbacks available in this year's draft.
