UFC 144 Results: Did Henderson vs. Edgar Lock Up Fight of the Year?

Jeffrey McKinneyJun 7, 2018

UFC 144 is now in the books, and we have a new UFC lightweight champion in Benson Henderson

Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar fought in a back and forth war that saw both men land many strikes, takedowns and submission attempts.

While Edgar landed more strikes, and possibly more takedowns, Henderson landed more significant strikes and submission attempts throughout the fight.

The biggest came in the second round when Henderson landed an upkick that instantly gave Edgar a bloody nose.

Not only did the kick appear to break Edgar's nose, it rocked him badly.

But like he has done so much in the past, Edgar showed just how much heart he has as he survived the round.

Not only did Henderson give Edgar a bloody nose, but he made Edgar's eye swell to the point of nearly being completely shut, almost pulling off a tight guillotine choke.

Edgar never gave up, though. In fact, he continued to move and land combinations. Edgar never slowed down, but Henderson was the clear aggressor in the fight.

Although Edgar was standing at the end of the fight, he was battered while Henderson was left without a scratch.

Edgar and Henderson have had many memorable fights in their careers. Edgar had comeback wars with Gray Maynard and nearly came back once again against Henderson. Henderson has had his fair share of wars with Clay Guida, Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone.

Both men together put on another memorable show.

There have been many great fights in just two short months this year.

Fabricio Werdum and Roy Nelson stole the show at UFC 143. Edson Barboza and Terry Etim also had a great fight at UFC 142.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Diego Sanchez and Jake Ellenberger put on a good scrap that should have been five rounds.

But this indeed was yet another great lightweight championship match. While it may not be a lock for fight of the year just yet, it was a great showing between two of the best fighters in MMA today.
