UFC 144 Results: What We Learned from Takanori Gomi vs. Eiji Mitsuoka

Sal DeRoseJun 6, 2018

Takanori Gomi returned home to Japan to face UFC newcomer Eiji Mitsuoka at UFC 144.

Gomi was almost the second Japanese legend to be sent home a loser when Mitsuoka rocked Gomi and proceeded to get his back. From there Mitsuoka went for a triangle but time ran out before Gomi could tap.

In the second Mitsuoka was all but drained and Gomi finished him with some strikes to get a second round TKO victory.

What we'll remember about this fight:

Well Mitsuoka almost choked out Gomi with a triangle while on Gomi's back. That on top of the finish by Gomi on a gassed Mitsuoka.

What we learned about Takanori Gomi:

Gomi still has what it takes to compete but he was almost finished in the first round and got lucky the bell rang.

What we learned about Eiji Mitsuoka:

Mitsuoka got gassed early and that cost him the fight. Silver lining, Mitsuoka had a nice choke and almost ended Gomi before the end of the first with a surprising triangle.

What's next for Gomi:

Gomi moves into the top 25 of lightweights, but I still don't think he is ready for some tough competition. He may get someone towards the end of the top 25 who will stand and trade with him.

What's next for Mitsuoka:

Unfortunately for Mitsuoka his time with the UFC could be up. I think he deserves another shot in the UFC as he looks like he has some serious submission skills. He could probably develop his striking skills for his next fight if the UFC decides to give him one.
